The Wild Enneagram: Integrating Ecology, Psychology, and Spirituality

with Ben Campbel & Jenny Campbell

“Psychology, so dedicated to awakening human consciousness, needs to wake itself up to one of the most ancient human truths: we cannot be studied or cured apart from the planet.”

~ Lester R. Brown in Ecopsychology, 1995

The Enneagram offers a powerful way to heal the split between psychology and spirituality, realms that tend to be kept separate in modern culture. Learning about the nine Types is really about learning to recognize when we are locked into the defensive posture of our ego (personality) versus when we are more Present, spiritually connected, and able to live from the Essential Gift that exists at the core of every Type.

However, while Enneagram teachings help us re-integrate psychology and spirituality, they rarely bring in the missing third: ecology. This reflects the false split between humans and the natural world that is so pervasive in Western cultures. We talk about “wild animals” as if human beings did not evolve in those same wild contexts and cyclical rhythms as other animals. We talk about “wilderness” as if it’s something out there, ignoring the inherent wildness of our own psycho-spiritual landscapes. This pervasive forgetting of our true nature has consequences, for ourselves and for the more-than-human world. The devastation of the “natural” world is one such consequence; our usually unspoken loneliness and despair is another.

Luckily, it is easier than we think to reconnect with our wildness, even in a modern context. One of the best ways is to invite nature to participate in our psychological and spiritual work, not as a mere backdrop, but as the actual source of transformation. To facilitate this, we will offer:

  • An introduction to the Enneagram for brand-new beginners
  • A fresh perspective on the Enneagram for more experienced students
  • Teachings on each type’s Spiritual Gift, Passion, Fixation, and Path of Transformation in the context of the more-than-human world
  • Inquiry exercises to personalize the material and connect with each other
  • Specific nature-based Enneagram practices to engage you with wild nature

We hope you will join us for this workshop, where we will magnify the wisdom and power of the Enneagram by honoring the reality that our human psychology and spirituality cannot be separated from the ecosystems in which we live.

FANTASTIC– Brought to life with humor, grace, and clarity the deep and complete Enneagram. I found Jenny and Ben to have such a great depth of knowledge, worked so well with each other, and presented so much positive and compassionate information about each type. Truly a beautiful experience

Ben Campbell

Ben Campbell

Ben Campbell is a Riso-Hudson Certified Enneagram Teacher and Coach, and an accredited professional with the International Enneagram Association (IEA). He is founder and president of Enneagram Northeast USA, a local chapter of the IEA.

Ben founded Wild Enneagram in response to what he sees as a missing piece in standard Enneagram trainings: nature & ecology. He believes strongly that for any personal growth model to be complete, it must account for the fact that our psyches are fundamentally wild, and evolved for millennia completely immersed in the rhythms and forces of nature.

In addition, Ben is a long-time student of both the Animas Valley Institute and the Maine Primitive Skills school, both organizations devoted to connecting our personal development work with the “outer work” of healing the Earth. Ben graduated from Bates College with a B.A. in East Asian Studies, and he currently lives in Bath, Maine, where he enjoys wandering the forests and shorelines of the midcoast.

Jenny Campbell

Jenny Campbell

Jenny Campbell is a Riso-Hudson Certified and Authorized Enneagram Teacher, an accredited professional with the International Enneagram Association (IEA), and a founding Board member of Enneagram Northeast USA. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Middlebury College, VT, and a Certificate in Spiritual Guidance from Rowe Camp & Conference Center. She has also studied with Animas Valley Institute for over a decade, learning the art and practice of nature-based soul work.

Jenny has been teaching the Enneagram since 2009, and from the beginning has oriented her work around immersive retreat weekends in beautiful places, encouraging her students to include the natural world in their process of healing, growth, and transformation. She lives in Leyden, MA (not far from Rowe) with her husband Dave. She designs and facilitates Enneagram and soul work retreats, teaches online Enneagram classes, and is available for private sessions. A longtime Friend of Rowe, she knows firsthand how the magic of Rowe supports this kind of work on the deepest and highest level. It is her dream come true to take the teacher’s seat for this workshop!
