Ralph Nader has launched three major presidential campaigns and founded more than 100 civic organizations that have affected auto safety, tax reform, atomic power regulation, occupational safety, the tobacco industry, clean air and water, food and drug safety, access to health care, civil rights, open government, congressional ethics, and much more. He is a tireless advocate for ending the destruction of civil liberties, voter choices, the economically draining corporate welfare state, the relentless perpetuation of America’s wars, sovereignty-shredding trade agreements, and the unpunished crimes of Wall Street against Main Street. He has written many bestsellers, including Unstoppable: The Emerging Left-Right Alliance to Dismantle the Corporate State; The Seventeen Traditions; The Good Fight; and the landmark Unsafe at Any Speed. His most recent books are Animal Envy: A Fable and Breaking Through Power: It’s Easier Than We Think.
“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”– H.L. Mencken, July 20, 1920
The recent presidential election proves Mencken was right: a paradox of democracy is that the people may elect a dangerous demagogue (albeit with the help of the Electoral College). The unstated half of the paradox, though, is that the people also can save democracy. Ralph Nader believes that what we need now is a galvanized, focused, grassroots movement of concerned citizens — left and right — guided by the U.S. Constitution and committed to defending our democratic values and institutions, defying the dictates of big businesses and the wealthy few who now dominate all three branches of our federal government. Good politics, Ralph says, can only come from good civic action.
We are proud to offer you this extraordinary opportunity to spend a weekend in conversation with Ralph about how we can work together to repair and restore our wounded democracy. For more than 50 years, Ralph has waged — and often won — David vs. Goliath battles against the powerful at all levels of society. The Atlantic magazine cited Ralph as one of the 100 most influential figures in American history. When Ralph came to Rowe two years ago, activists from all over the country joined him for dynamic planning sessions and returned home with new energy, commitment, and tools. Now it’s your turn! Now is the time to turn hopelessness into action.
