Senior High Camp: Ages 16-19
Date(s) - July 29, 2018 - August 18, 2018
Each day, campers participate in a wide variety of amazing workshops on topics such as dreams, identity, spirituality, body image, addiction, sexuality, grief and loss, and politics. In the evenings, campers join the whole community for events like talent shows and large-scale games or dances and rituals. At the end of each evening, we all go to Chapel for a time to share readings, songs, and reflections about what touches us most deeply. It is a time when we can choose to express, or simply feel, our greatest joys and most profound hurts in an atmosphere of acceptance and safety.
The Senior High program staff brings a diversity of experience as well as a love of and respect for teenagers. The staff is present to ensure safety, provide emotional support, share talents and skills, listen without judgment, and lead by example. They are committed to coming together and being very intentional about building a community in which all people are treated with dignity and respect.
By making workshops, chapels, and even sleep optional, we’ve found that campers consistently go home from camp with a stronger commitment to taking responsibility for their lives and with increased self-confidence, self-respect, and acceptance of others, including brothers, sisters, and parents. The Rowe Spirit offers a magical and compelling sense of belonging, warmth, growth, intensity, and love.
“Rowe is about learning your true beliefs and accepting/embracing who you are” – SHC Camper
Zoe Donnellycolt is a performance artist based in Oakland California. Originally from the woods of Connecticut, she received her BA from Bennington College in Vermont. Zoe has been published by Two Plum Press and has presented work at various venues in the Bay Area. She has a daily dance practice and supports the emergence of Bay Area Artists through a home-made performance series. Zoe has worked with youth at Rowe since 2008. She currently supports the youth programming at East Bay Dance Center as an administrative assistant and has previously worked with teenagers in Oakland and San Francisco public schools. She believes in youth empowerment through listening and creative collaboration.
Jenn Bufithis-Hurie started going to Rowe as a camper at Junior High Camp in 2003 and continued coming back for three more summers at Senior High Camp. She learned so much at Rowe as a teen and wanted to help be part of the leadership team in this intentional community. For this reason, Jenn came back to be on staff in 2010 and has worked on full-time program staff or guest staff at both JHC and SHC since. Since graduating from Beloit College in WI with a BA in Psychology, she’s been living in Boston doing youth development work primarily with underserved families and communities. Jenn is excited to be moving into this new role at SHC and feels privileged to be the new Co-Director in the summer of 2017.
