The pulse of the universe embraces us all: from the singular pulsing of a heartbeat, to the cyclical rhythms of the seasons, to the polymetric cycles of planets and stars. Rhythm and vibration are fundamental to our well being. Drumming connects us to our essential nature and human heritage: that which is primal and vibrant, within and surrounding us. People are drawn to the drum, one of the world’s most ancient healing and expressive tools. Indigenous people have tapped into these natural phenomena, evolving music traditions of joy and celebration, as well as healing and transformation.

Experience the joy, unity, and healing power of drumming as we journey into the world of African, Afro-Caribbean, and Brazilian percussion music. Under the inspiring and professional guidance of master-drummer Steve Leicach, we learn traditional rhythms on authentic instruments, including the the Djembe, Conga drums, the Shekere (a giant gourd percussion instrument), the Balafon (a West African xylophone), the Ewe drum family (colorful barrel drums from Ghana), and traditional bells and rattles. Learn call and response, clapping and vocalizing, hand drumming strokes, and playing techniques.

In a relaxed and nurturing environment we explore hand and stick drumming, multi-part ensemble rhythms, self-expression and improvisation, how to create your own rhythms, the healing and trance inducing aspects of drumming, “drum language”: how the drum literally “speaks” and communicates, and traditional dances, stories, and songs.

No musical experience is required. Traditional drums and percussion instruments will be provided, but please bring your own instruments if you have them.

Steve Leicach, a master drummer, is an expert in Ghanaian drumming, African and Caribbean hand-drumming, drum improvisation, percussion theory, and traditional instrument making. Steve has drummed for over 35 years and is admired by all who hear him for his melodious and fluid drumming. People appreciate Steve’s gentle, sensitive, and heart-centered teaching. He presents rhythms in a clear and easy to understand fashion, creates a safe and welcoming environment, and facilitates the coming together of diverse people. He has created an instructional DVD: The Quick Guide to Djembe Drumming.

“The first time I heard African drums being played, the music went directly into my heart. I knew I had to learn to drum. As a teenager, every day after school I’d practice, captivated by the energizing, soothing, and centering effects of rhythm. I experienced the power of the drum. I suffered terribly with bad allergies, but the moment I’d begin to play, most of my symptoms would just disappear.” — Steve Leicach
