In this unique gathering, we will have the opportunity to explore the rich potential for a spirit-soul relationship with horses. At this critical time for life on earth, communication and cooperation with animals could play a powerful and positive role in our evolution and, possibly, our survival.

Horses, with their power, grace, sensitivity, and beauty, are particularly adept at teaching us about authenticity, connection, and presence. Because they are herd animals and move together, being in resonant presence with them can enliven and strengthen dormant parts of ourselves, moving us closer to our own potential as human beings. When we release our isolating species superiority, becoming part of the herd, and allowing them to teach us, horses offer a spiritual kinship that brings hope for this world we share.

Guided by life-long horse people who honor the soul and the spirit of both horses and humans, we will use words, sound, silence, mindfulness, centering prayer, and writing to create a meditative space in which to explore the intersection of human/horse consciousness. During the days we join with the horses at a nearby farm, not to ride, but through enhanced observation, feeling, and listening, to explore relationship beyond our ordinary awarness. Our work will be respectful, simple, and deep. Weather permitting, we’ll also accompany horses through a Horse Labyrinth.

This is not a workshop just for “horse people.” It is an invitation for anyone who would like to join in a full-hearted exploration of the edges of consciousness. In the presence of these exceptional creatures, we have the potential to deepen our connection with spirit and with the earth.

Joan Schoenhals, a Counseling Psychologist and experienced group facilitator, has used a process approach to training and consultation in the areas of diversity and multiculturalism, working with clients in both the private and public sectors.  Joan has a practice of Centering Prayer in the tradition of Contemplative Outreach and teams with her husband to run the nearby Birch Glen Stables.

Annie Skillings, a horse woman for over 40 years, has been taught by many amazing horses, working as an instructor and trainer for 33 years. She also worked for 13 years at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the UMass Medical Center with Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues. She has found that mindfulness enriches and deepens one’s experience with the horses.

Molly Scott is a singer, psychotherapist, and poet with a doctorate in counseling who has loved and worked with horses all her life and uses them in her Creative Resonance training with voice and healing. An old friend of Rowe, she is an international artist, teacher, and trainer, and she has a horse labyrinth on her land.
