One black jacket two funerals

Nancy Slonim Aronie

One nebulizer
two teaspoons raw honey
one neurologist
one psychologist
two hospital beds
two of my favorite heads
my mother curly silver
my son straight dark brown
just can’t imagine life
without those two around
she 92
the more appropriate age for death
he’s my baby
still part of my breath

One black jacket
two funerals
one walker
two wheel chairs
three supplements upon rising
five drops under the tongue
cream her face
soak his toes
he wilts in summer
she aches when it snows
ginger for his nausea
arnica for her bruise
if I were Sophie
which one would I choose

So I drive to Hartford
prop her up in her bed
bring her pad thai
dress her in red
we repeat an old punch line
don’t need the joke
it’s the laughter we’re after
like fire and smoke
she’s back in her body
she’s decided to stay
like a suicide threat
postponed for a day

One black jacket
two calls home
Dan’s fever has broken
he’s down to the bone
but wait
I hear life force
through the holes of the phone

One black jacket
three survivors
one enormous smile
no funerals….

For a while
